RULES AND REGULATIONS

KMON JUDGING CONTEST

Open to all youth ages 17-20

Must be 17 but not older than 20 by January 1, 2007

 

MISSION STATEMENT:  The Beef Ambassador Program provides an opportunity for youth to become spokespersons and future leaders for the beef industry.

OVERALL GOAL:  Utilize Beef Ambassadors to provide information about beef’s nutrition, safety and convenience to consumers.  Provide producers with industry information, including facts about the beef checkoff program.

PROGRAM MANAGERS:  Montana CattleWomen, National Cattlemen’s Beef Board and the American National CattleWomen, Inc.

 

THE PRESENTATION

 

Each contestant is required to present a five to eight minute speech.  Speeches should bring to light the importance of the beef industry and the importance of beef as an agricultural product, spotlighting the positive impact the cattle industry has on our economy and families.

 

THE PRESENTATION

 

1.      Must be factual based on information provided from the American National CattleWomen Beef Ambassador packet and/or through personal research.  (Packet website www.ancw.org.)  Also available from your county agent or Linda Davis, Montana CattleWomen, 8517 Hwy 287, Townsend, MT. 59644, 266-3786.)

2.      Speech should have a theme that is addressed throughout the entire presentation.

3.      After the presentation, the contestants will be asked questions by the judges based on beef information.  Two to three minutes will be allowed for questions.  Contestant answers to judges’ questions will be evaluated in two areas:  information given and the poise of the contestant in answering questions.

4.      If the presentation is less than five minutes or exceeds eight minutes in length, it will affect the final score.  This does not include the judges’ questions at the end of the presentation.

5.      No visual aids of any kind will be permitted.  This includes but is not limited to: notecards, power point, table top displays, other props, costumes, or videos.

6.      Contestants are encouraged not to identify themselves by name or area, either on person or in their presentations.  However, this will not disqualify them.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PRESENTATION EVALUATION=100 points

THE PRESENTATION WILL BE EVALUATED AS FOLLOWS:

CONTENT:  Introduction     Sparks interest, establishes importance, and outlines overall theme or focus.

 

General Information  Conveys an important message about today’s beef.  Is accurate, complete, and up-to-date.  Follows logical order.

 

Summary of Main Points    The audience is left with a clear understanding of important concepts.  Theme is carried throughout entire speech.  Responses to judges’ questions are appropriate and presented factually.

 

PRESENTER:

 

Appearance                Business professional dress is required; skirt length must be to the knee or below.

 

Delivery                      Strong voice projection, speaks with ease and confidence, avoids clichés and maintains rapport with the audience.

 

Time                            All speeches must be at least five minutes in length not to exceed eight minutes.  This does not include the judges’ questions at the end of the presentation.

 

INTERVIEW EVALUATION=100 points

 

Depth                          Answers are well thought out and show knowledge of the subject.

 

Impromptu                  Ability to think quickly and carry a conversation with knowledge and confidence.

 

Composure                 Calm, not nervous or shy.

 

Honesty                      Shows integrity and straight forwardness in answers.

 

Manners                     Courteous to others and responsive to the questions.

 

Confidence                 Shows confidence in answers and self without being flippant, arrogant or conceited.

 

Humor                         Ability to make the conversation interesting and appealing.

LUNCH:         A lunch with beverage will be available for $4.00.  Additional snacks and beverages will be for sale throughout the day.  Pay for lunch tickets with pre-registration.

 

REGISTRATION FEE:        $2.00 per person for career development, meats, livestock, crops, and beef ambassador contests.  Registration and lunch ticket fees are due with your pre-registration.  They may be transferred to a different person, but are not refundable.  Additional tickets will be available on site at a cost of $3.00 per contest or $5.00 for lunch.

ADULTS:  All teams must be accompanied by an adult who will be available to assist with a contest

 

AG SALES AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT:  See enclosed information and registration form.

 

MEATS CONTEST:              This will be the State Contest for FFA and for 4-H.  4-H teams must have 3-4 members, each 14 or older by October 1 of 2006 to qualify as the state team and trip to Western Regional Roundup.  The contest will include a written test, identification of retail ID cuts, wholesale, retail judging classes and quality grading.  Touching of the meat product in any part of the contest will result in disqualification.

CROPS CONTEST:   The crops contest will include plant and seed identification (crops and weeds), crop product uses, range conditions, AUM calculations and crop seed evaluation/judging classes.  Any member not participating in the meats contest should be encouraged to try the Crops Contest.

LIVESTOCK CONTEST:      The contest could include classes of beef, sheep, wool, swine, dairy and horse, two classes of reasons, possibly a keep/cull class and some livestock application problems (hands-on or practical problems involving livestock management, vet tools, feed and feed problems).

There will be a novice group that may judge with their parents or leaders. Their cards will be scored but will not be considered for awards.

Attention:       The pavilion doors will be opened at 12:45 p.m.  No one will be permitted in the arena prior to that time!

BEEF AMBASSADOR CONTEST: This contest provides youth an opportunity to become spokespersons and future leaders for the beef industry.  Participants will present a five to eight minute speech highlighting the importance of the beef industry and the importance of beef as an agricultural product, spotlighting the positive impact the cattle industry has on our economy and families.  Youth must be 17 but not over 20 by January 1, 2007.  Complete information and registration form enclosed.

NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED IN JUDGING AREAS EXCEPT REGISTERED MEMBERS AND ASSISTANTS FOR ANY OF THE CONTESTS!

 

Remember, No one will be permitted in the livestock pavilion prior to 12:45!
