Beef Cook-Off Contest
The Montana State Fair Beef Cook-Off is conducted annually to promote Montana's BEEF industry.
Instructions for Categories and
Entries:
- Any teenager between the ages of 13-18
years of age may enter the contest.
Adults are 18 years and older.
- Contestants will create their fun beef
recipe that promotes nutritional balance, is loved by the teens and has
family appeal.
- Contestants must be able to prepare and
display the beef dish without any outside assistance.
- Contest entry forms are available at the
Cascade County Extension Office, 1807 3rd St. N.W., Great Falls,
MT 59404
- Contestants for the Montana State Beef
Cook-Off will be notified prior to the contest by the Cascade County
Extension Office.
"Beef in the Kitchen" Contest Rules:
- Include three printed or typed copies
of the recipe with the entry blank which are due July 27, 2011.
The Extension Office will NOT type recipes.
- The number of servings must be included.
- The entry must serve four our more people with a minimum of
four
ounces of BEEF per serving.
- The entry must be suitable for a main dish at a meal.
No snacks or dishes may be served on a bun.
- The dish must be cooked to completion in 30 minutes or less.
- No more than eight ingredients, not including water,
spices, or
seasonings, will be permitted.
- There will be no outdoor cooking.
- All cooking is to be done on site. No advance
preparation of any ingredient.
- No other meat but beef may be used including deli meat of
any variety.
- Placemats, serving dishes and utensils may be used;
centerpieces or
table settings are not permitted.
- Marinating meat will not be considered against the "ease of
preparation."
- No wine or sherry will be permitted in the cookery of the
dish.
- Contestants must dress appropriately for cooking, including
an apron, hair net or covered hair for girls and boys, ball caps or
hair net required. No open-toed shoes or short shorts, no tank
tops, excess jewelry.
- The contest will be conducted under the supervision of a
Montana CattleWomen Chairman and a MSU Extension Family and Consumer
Science Agent and Cascade County Homemakers.
Materials Furnished by Contestants:
Meat
and all other ingredients for the preparation of the recipe.
Equipment needed to prepare the
recipe.
Utensils needed to prepare the
recipe.
Serving items needed for the
finished product.
The dish must be prepared at the
contest site and placed on an appropriate serving dish or container.
The dish or finished product must
be ready for judging at the designated time, regardless of a late start
or forgotten items.
NO members of the contestant's
families will be allowed in the food preparations area. Contestants,
Extension agents, and the Chairman are the only people allowed in the
kitchen area during preparation time.
Judging Criteria:
Judging will be completed by three qualified persons,
including a Family and Consumer Science teacher or Extension Agent and
an upper level 4-H member who has taught food and nutrition classes for
4-H.
- Selection of judges will be completed by the local
Montana CattleWomen
Chairman.
- Techniques in preparing the dish WILL NOT be considered.
- Judging will be completed based on the finished product.
- No one will be allowed in the judging area during judging.
- Chairwomen and Extension agent are allowed to confer with
the judges.
- THE DECISION OF THE JUDGES IS FINAL.
- Judging will take place after each category.
- Winners will be announced at 5pm.
- Contestants will receive the judges score sheets and
comments

- 1st Place.....$150
- 2nd Place....$ 75
- 3rd Place.....$ 50
